Female Anorexia

There is absolutely no doubt that a vast majority of anorexics are women. Highest number of anorexic women belong to the age group of 10 to 20 years, but middle-aged women also form a substantial part of the anorexic population. Interestingly, even women as old as 76 years have been found to suffer from this disorder. Studies prove that chances of anorexia developing at an early age are higher for women as compared to men. This is because when girls reach puberty, many of them tend to put on weight. Since childhood, girls are made to feel that men are attracted to women who are thin and have a shapely figure. This, supplemented with the change of feelings that a girl undergoes regarding the opposite sex, leads to uncertainty and insecurity. Girls also tend to imitate public figures and come to believe that their salvation lies only in being thin and slender. Sports like ice-skating and gymnastics along with other professions like ballet and modeling also demand a lean body structure.

Little do they realize the harm that they are doing to their bodies. Physical pain is especially pronounced amongst women. Most of the anorexic women have irregular menstrual periods. In extreme cases, many even stop having them and need treatment like artificial induction. This kind of weight loss is dangerous and has various negative side effects, both physical and psychological. As the body does not get adequate nutrition the general health condition deteriorates and with age these women are susceptible to several diseases.

Anorexia makes it next to impossible, not just to conceive a baby, but to manage to carry it the whole nine months. Normally, a pregnant woman should gain at least 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. An anorexic pregnant woman, who refuses to eat healthily, thereby not gaining the required weight, could cause a lot of damage to herself and her unborn child. She requires special medical attention and psychological care.
